Young’s reels in prestigious award

Young’s Seafood Ltd. on Tuesday was named Seafood Manufacturer of the Year at the Food Manufacturing Excellence Awards at the Park Plaza Riverbank in London.

The chilled and frozen seafood giant was recognized for its Manufacturing Excellence (Manex) initiative, showcased at its processing facility in Annan. The site has undergone considerable re-development in recent years and now produces 1,000 metric tons of scampi each year.

“We are delighted to have won this prestigious award, and it’s great that the business has been recognized as Seafood Manufacturer of the Year,” said Steve Lidgett, Young’s operations director. “I would like to thank the team in Annan for their incredible determination in driving the business’ Manex journey, which is helping to deliver growth and increase on-site efficiencies. Their passion and commitment is a credit to Young’s, and we will build on this achievement with continued improvement going forward.”

The Annan site has reduced water usage by more than 30 percent and has pledged to eliminate all food and packing waste to landfill by 2013, noted Lidgett.

“Our Manex journey is further boosting morale and encouraging an inclusive culture, generating a genuine pride and passion for the site and our products,” he said. “This has been an integral part of Annan’s success in recent years, which has been underpinned by the development of Young’s formed scampi in 2009 and the introduction of Scampi Bites in June 2011.”
