A Texas, United States-based importer is recalling more than 50,000 pounds of basa – a type of catfish – sourced from Vietnam.
McAllen Cold Storage in McAllen, Texas, is recalling approximately 51,942 pounds of frozen basa fillets that were not presented for import re-inspection into the United States, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in a press release.
The fillets were imported from Vietnam to the U.S. on various dates from 1 August, 2018 through 15 February, 2019, and were shipped to retail locations throughout Texas.
“The problem was discovered when an FSIS investigator conducted an inquiry to determine if McAllen Cold Storage received imported pangasius frozen basa fillet products originating from the country of Vietnam,” the agency said.
While FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consuming them.
The recalled products include: 22-pound white cardboard cases containing five-ounce to seven-ounce pieces of “bwi® FROZEN PANGASIUS (BASA) FILLETS SKINLESS & BONELESS” with case code “BWI 134833” and use by date of 31/05/2020, and with case code “BWI 134858” and use by date of 01/06/2020.
