Mazzetta still plans to sell Gloucester plant, despite restarting limited operations

The Mazzetta Company has restarted operations at its Gloucester, Massachusetts, U.S.A. processing facility, despite shuttering the plant in 2017 and its public listing of the building for sale.

The plant is open and workers “are cutting fish there right now,” Mazzetta Co. owner Tom Mazzetta told SeafoodSource.

“It’s not operating at full capacity, but it’s a very big plant,” he said. “But we brought people back to work.”

Mazzetta confirmed the plant is still for sale and is actively being shopped, corroborating a listing showing the plant priced at USD 11 million (EUR 9.6 million). That price does not include equipment, Mazzetta said, adding the plant is for sale with its equipment for USD 17 million (EUR 14.8 million).

Mazzetta bought the 65,000-square-foot plant, which was built in 2003, for around USD 5 million (then EUR 4.7 million). It was previously owned by Good Harbor Fillet LLC, and was acquired by American Seafoods in 2012, but the company closed the facility in 2014. After it purchased the plant, Mazzetta committed more than USD 8 million (EUR 7 million) to improving it, including USD 1.5 million (EUR 1.3 million) on building improvements, USD 5 million (EUR 4.4 million) on new equipment, and USD 1 million (EUR 870,000) on a new 8,000-square-foot lobster tank, officials from the city of Gloucester told the Newburyport News.

In December 2016, Mazzetta shuttered all operations at the Gloucester plant, resulting in the layoffs of around 175 employees.
