Three plant-based seafood companies expanding in the UK

Vegan and vegetarian seafood is hot in the United Kingdom, as three plant-based companies expand.

Linda McCartney Foods rolled out vegetarian Fish Goujons, while Heather Mills’ VBites is producing more than 540 vegetarian products, including Fish-Free Smoked Salmon Slices.

“Fish are friends, NOT food! Until now,” Linda McCartney Foods said on its Instagram account. “Our NEW Vegetarian Fish Goujons are so deliciously close to the real deal, you might not believe they’re [vegan-friendly].”

The Goujons, available at Sainsbury’s, are made with soya and wheat protein in a crispy lemon and parsley breadcrumb coating, the supplier said.

And Quorn hunched two new vegan seafood products: Salt & Vinegar Battered Fishless Fillets and Lemon & Pepper Breaded Fishless Fillets. They will retail for a suggested retail price of GBP 2.99 (USD 3.91, EUR 3.40) per two-pack, Plant Based News reported.

"For the first time ever, more than half of all U.K. consumers are reducing their meat consumption and 57 percent of people believe that reducing meat benefits the environment,” said Alex Glen, marketing director for Quorn, according to Plant Based News.

Plus, Sainsbury said early January that it was rolling out plant-based smoked salmon and prawns from Sophie’s Kitchen. As an introductory offer, the grocer is selling Sophie’s Kitchen Vegan Shrimp 250-gram boxes for GBP 3.50 (USD 4.57, EUR 3.98) each.

Linda McCartney Foods and Quorn did not respond to SeafoodSource’s requests for more information on their products.
