A Houston, Texas-based importer is recalling smoked catfish from Nigeria because it is not allowed to be imported into the country.
Olufela Yemitan is recalling around 45 pounds of dried, smoked catfish that were not presented at the U.S. point of entry for inspection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said.
“The products were imported from Nigeria, a country that is not eligible to export siluriformes to the United States,” FSIS said in a press release.
The smoked catfish was shipped to retail locations in Texas.
The problem was discovered on 28 August by FSIS through routine monitoring.
The catfish products were manufactured throughout August. The one-pound, plastic-wrapped packages are labeled, “picante fishes spicy catfish smoked with tomatoe pepper sauce ready to eat now!” The manufacturing date is August 2018 and the best buy date is February 2019.
“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” FSIS said.
However, “there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products,” the agency added.
