US restaurant chains start Lent promotions early

While Lent has a late start this year – 6 March, 2019 – one U.S. fast food chain added new seafood items to its menu in late December.

Arby’s, which operates more than 3,340 restaurants, unveiled three fish sandwiches that will be available until the end of April.

Its new King’s Hawaiian Fish Deluxe sandwich features sweet Hawaii buns and crispy Alaskan pollock. Arby’s Cajun Fish sandwich features breaded and fried Alaskan pollock, topped with a Cajun remoulade sauce, and its Crispy Fish sandwich, also made with breaded, fried Alaskan pollock, is topped with tartar sauce and lettuce.

Meanwhile, Del Taco, which operates 564 restaurants, told SeafoodSource it is rolling out a seasonal menu item for Lent in late January.

“[We're] thrilled to bring back our crispy Jumbo Shrimp Tacos for Lent, which will be on the menu come 31 January for a limited time,” said a spokesperson for the chain.

Another current seafood staple on Del Taco’s menu, the Beer Battered Fish Taco, is being featured as part of the chain’s recently-launched “Mix2 Menu,” which allows guests to choose two of their “fan favorite” tacos for USD 4 (EUR 3.46), the spokesperson said.

The Beer Battered Fish Taco is made with Alaskan pollock.
