Norwegian salmon export value falls despite higher volumes

Norway exported 103,000 metric tons (MT) of farmed Atlantic salmon worth NOK 5.7 billion (USD 685.8 million, EUR 579.1 million) last month, representing a 11 percent increase in volume but a 5 percent fall in value compared with November 2016.

The average export price for fresh whole salmon last month was NOK 50.68 (USD 6.10, EUR 5.14) per kg, which was down from NOK 54.65 (USD 6.58, EUR 5.55) per kg in October and NOK 11.03 (USD 1.33, EUR 1.12) less than the average for November 2016.

In the first 11 months of 2017, Norwegian exporters shipped 909,000 MT of salmon products with a total value of NOK 59 billion (USD 7.1 billion, EUR 6 billion), with the volume and value up 2 percent and 7 percent respectively, compared with the corresponding period of 2016.

The Scandinavian country’s traditional salmon markets of Poland and France have continued to buy the most fish this year, and according to the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSC), salmon exports to China are now at their highest level for two years.

Norway is forecast to harvest 1.2 million MT of salmon this year and 1.3 million MT in 2018.
