The value of Vietnam’s seafood exports is expected to reach USD 8.3 billion (EUR 7.1 billion) this year, an increase of 18 percent compared with 2016, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Latest statistics compiled by the association estimate that in the first 11 months of this year, Vietnam exported USD 7.6 billion (EUR 6.5 billion) worth of seafood, up 18 percent year-on-year. In November alone, the export turnover climbed 11 percent from the previous month to USD 733 million (EUR 624.3 million).

Specifically, shrimp exports achieved a value of USD 3.5 billion (EUR 3 billion) in the 11-month period, up 22 percent year-on-year. With regards to other key species, Vietnamese pangasius and tuna exports over the same period climbed 5 percent and 19 percent respectively to USD 1.6 billion (EUR 1.4 billion) and USD 541 million (EUR 460.9 million).

Local media reported that the market had seen slow growth in recent months and that seafood exports to the EU would probably reduce this month following the yellow warning over illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing concerns.

Overall, Vietnam’s total shrimp harvest has been forecast to increase slightly to 660,000 metric tons (MT) this year.
