U.S. shrimp imports continued to steadily increase in August after a consistent decline earlier in the year.
In August 2023, the U.S. imported a total of 73,429 metric tons (MT), or 161 million pounds, of shrimp – up from 71,388 MT (157 million pounds) imported in August 2022, and up from the 69,356 MT (152 million pounds) of shrimp imported in July 2023.
Mathew Scaletta, the owner of Klawock, Alaska, U.S.A.-based Wildfish Cannery, believes tinned seafood is having its rightful moment in the spotlight but that U.S. brands – at least when it comes to premium products – have still not found their foothold in the burgeoning market.
