Norwegian salmon exports to the EU, US, China drop

The Nasdaq Salmon Index showed the average price of a kilogram of Atlantic salmon farmed in Norway declined by NOK 2.48 (USD 0.22, EUR 0.21) this past week. 

The index, which provides weekly sales updates and a weighted average price for fresh, head-on gutted Atlantic superior salmon from Norway, said the average per-kilogram price of salmon has declined NOK 1.12 (USD 0.10, EUR 0.01) over the past four weeks. Over the last 12 weeks, the price has risen NOK 3.47 (USD 0.31, EUR 0.29).

In week 44 of 2023, the Oslo Børs Fish Pool Price Status reported Norway exported a total of 24,502 metric tons (MT) of salmon, up from 24,013 MT exported in the corresponding week of 2022, and down from the 26,459 MT Norwegian suppliers exported overseas in week 43.

The Norwegian Salmon Council's weekly report on Norwegian seafood exports, meanwhile, indicates that the country exported 24,502 MT of salmon. The largest volume of salmon was exported to the E.U., with 19,254 MT – up from 24,013 MT in the same week of 2022. 

In Europe, Poland received 4,759, which is down from last week’s 7,506 MT; Denmark imported 2,618 MT, up from last week’s 3,749 MT; the Netherlands imported 2,506 MT, down from 3,266 MT; France imported 2,416 MT, up from 2,397 MT;  Spain imported 1,748 MT, up from 1,842 MT; Italy imported 1,336 MT, up from 1,663 MT; and the United Kingdom imported 1,235 MT, down from last week’s 1,490 MT.

China received 814 MT, down from last week’s 986 MT, and the U.S. imported 535 MT,  down from last week’s 750MT. 

One- to 2-kilogram salmon accounted for 0.38 percent of total sales, with an average price of NOK 61.59 (USD 5.50, EUR 5.15), a decline of NOK 5.71 (USD 0.51, EUR 0.48) over last week, Fish Pool reported. Two-to-3-kilogram salmon accounted for 6.55 percent of total sales, and sold for an average of NOK 74.31 (USD 6.63, EUR 6.21), down NOK 2.93 (USD 0.26, EUR 0.24).

Salmon in the 3- to 4-kilogram range made up 28.17 percent of all fish sold, and had a per-kilogram average price of NOK 77.26 (USD 6.90, EUR 6.45), a decline of NOK 2.80 (USD 0.25, EUR 0.23). The 4-to-5-kilogram category, comprising 31.61 percent of total sales, saw its average price decline NOK 2.76 (USD 0.25, EUR 0.23) from last week.

Salmon between 5 and 6 kilograms, representing 21.39 percent of total sales, declined to an average per-kilogram price of NOK 78.80 (USD 7.03, EUR 6.58), down NOK 1.13 (USD 0.10, EUR 0.01), while 6- to 7-kilogram salmon, which accounted for 10.14 percent of the total distribution, sold for an average of NOK 77.39 (USD 6.91, EUR 6.47) – a decline of NOK 3.69 (USD 0.33, EUR 0.31). The price of salmon weighing between 7 and 8 kilograms has increased to NOK 79.54 (USD 7.10, EUR 6.64), and made up 1.29 percent of the total distribution.

Fish Pool reported November's futures pricing declined to NOK 78.50 (USD 7.01, EUR 6.55) from last week’s NOK 79.00 (USD 7.06, EUR 6.69). December's future pricing declined slightly to NOK 87.00 from last week’s NOK 87.60 (USD 7.82, EUR 7.41). Futures pricing for Q4 2023 has declined to NOK 82.53 (USD 7.38, EUR 6.89) from last week’s NOK 82.87 (USD 7.40, EUR 7.01).
