Mauritius at SEG to boost business with Russia, EU

Representatives of Mauritius hosted a meet-and-greet with potential buyers of its seafood at its pavilion at Seafood Expo Global on Wednesday, 27 April.

Mauritius, an African island nation off the coast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, is seeking to boost trade with Russia and nations in the European Union at this year’s expo, according to Yogesh Amoroo, the assistant manager of Enterprise Mauritius.

“With the recent authorization obtained to export seafood to Russia, Mauritian suppliers will also be able to establish contacts with Russian buyers,” Amoroo said. “At the same time, other new markets that will be targeted include Netherlands, U.K., Belgium, Spain and Portugal.”

Three companies from Mauritius are exhibiting at this year’s expo: Ferme Marine De Mahebourg, SAPMER and Seskel Enterprises. Products available for export include red drum fish (Sciaenops ocellatus), European seabass (Dicentrachus labrax), frozen premium tuna steak and loin, salted snoek (Thyrsites atun) and tuna in cans and pouches.

At the meet-and-greet, Mauritius Ambassador to Belgium Haymandoyal Dillum visited the booth and highlighted the economic opportunities available in his country, which has a total maritime zone measuring 2.3 million square kilometers.

Amoroo said his country has potential for investment in seabed exploration for hydrocarbon and minerals, deep sea water application, fishing and seafood processing and high-end aquaculture.
