8.) Wet market shake-out
Good news recently arrived for the new wave of retailers and online grocers selling high-margin seafood in China, as Chinese authorities began a crackdown on the country’s wet markets.
Wet markets in cities across the country have fallen to an ongoing “urban rectification” campaign, as authorities push to reduce migrant populations in major cities while also improving building safety and hygiene.
The campaign looks set to continue through 2018 and has already triggered a consolidation of the seafood trading scene and greater market share for the country’s larger seafood trading firms, according to a series of reports on the sector in Henan, China’s most populous region.
