Blog: Happy Anniversary Seafood Summit

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since the first Seafood Summit, which at that time addressed issues that were foreign to many in attendance. Since that first event was held in Washington, D.C., with about 20 environmentalists, the event has become the venue for open dialog on sustainable-seafood topics. These discussions fuel decisions both small and grand that can impact the future of the world’s fish supplies.

This year I’m looking forward to discussions on ocean acidification, the future of the shark-fin market, handling IUU fishing through fisheries policy and many other interesting topics. As with every Summit there are so many topics to cover and only so many hours in the day, a challenge that every event organizer has to handle.

I’m eager to hear who the winners of the annual Seafood Champion Awards are. The list of 15 finalists spans the globe, from Madagascar to Scotland to Ecuador to China. This is the “Who’s Who” of innovators who can be held as role models for sustainable seafood.

As the event’s official media sponsor, I hope you take advantage of the resources we’ve provided and the continuing discussions on social media such as Twitter (use #HK12 to be a part of the conversation). After the Summit is the Asian Seafood Exposition featuring Frozen Food Asia, sponsored by SeafoodSource parent Diversified Business Communications. I hope to see you at that event too where discussions and important business transactions will be made.

Once again, happy anniversary to everyone at SeaWeb and those affiliated with the Seafood Summit. Important discussions have been held over the past 10 years, and there are many more topics to be addressed.
