China naming and shaming manufacturers of fake aquaculture antibiotics

China is seeking to limit the use of antibiotics and fake drugs in its aquaculture sector by publicizing a list of manufacturers found to be making or distributing fake antibiotics.

The country’s Ministry of Agriculture published the list last week. One firm, Qingdao Jin Kai Li Dong Wu Animal Antibiotics, was listed as being found to be making and selling “fake” antibiotics that don’t contain the stated, correct ingredients. Another 21 firms were named for selling or distributing “fake” antibiotics made with cheap and useless ingredients.

At a government seminar in Beijing last week, Chen Jia Yong, head of aquaculture regulation at the Ministry of Agriculture, said

“China needs to reduce the use of antibiotics in aquaculture and focus instead on better innovation and better training to minimize the use of drugs,” Chen said.

During the seminar, Chen also announced a pilot program for training fish farmers on appropriate drug use but didn’t give details of where or when it will start.
