GOAL 2011 to be held in Chile

The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) recently announced that its annual Global Outlook for Aquaculture Leadership (GOAL) meeting will take place at the Grand Hyatt Santiago in Santiago, Chile, from 6 to 9 November.

Organized by the GAA, GOAL 2011 will combine targeted information on aquaculture production and marketing with opportunities to network with the more than 300 industry insiders expected to attend.

The meeting consists of three half-day sessions, starting with talks on production data. The meeting will then look at issues and solutions before discussing global farmed seafood markets on the final day. The half-day sessions will also deliver expert interpretations of global data, concise reviews of leading international markets, pricing trends for 2012 and insights on seafood issues. Presentations will cover the most widely traded farmed seafood species, including white shrimp, black tiger shrimp, pangasius, channel catfish, tilapia, salmonids and emerging species.

At last year’s meeting, GAA Executive Director Wally Stevens challenged the global aquaculture community to gear up to meet the world’s increasing demand for seafood. That challenge is now the theme of the 2011 conference, “Double in a Decade — Responsibly.” GOAL 2010 established the “what:” more middle-class consumers, especially in Asia, are eating more seafood.

Now GOAL 2011 will consider the “hows.” The meeting aims to generate answers to questions such as: How will existing facilities generate more product? Will new culture areas be developed? Will advances in technology once again come to the rescue? How will this major growth be financed? And how can all of this be accomplished responsibly?
