Malaysia, S. Korea to collaborate on aquaculture

Malaysia and South Korea this week signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to share aquaculture technology knowledge.

Speaking at a ceremony in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Malaysia’s Sabah state, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Yahya  Hussin said there’s a need for the Malaysian government to obtain new information so that it can help move the country’s aquaculture industry forward in a sustainable manner.

The two bodies involved in the pact are the Department of Fisheries Sabah (DOFS) and the National Fisheries Research Development Institute of South Korea (NFRDI). Acquiring fish broodstock was identified as an area that requires particular attention in Sabah and its surrounding states in Borneo.

“The MOU will provide a framework to boost cooperation in the fisheries sector and to encourage mutual consultation, exchange of technical assistance and joint research,” said Yahya.

Yahya, who is also state minister of agriculture and food industries, said consumers demand food-safety and product-quality assurances.

“Our local fish producers, including [fish farmers], must provide confidence in their products’ suitability. Products must attain such standards that are not only met but exceeded,” he said.
