Pangasius certification standards finalized

The Global Aquaculture Alliance on Wednesday announced the completion of its Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification standards for pangasius farms, adding that its BAP certification standards for salmon farms are “nearing completion.”

The GAA’s Standards Oversight Committee (SOC), which guides development of the standards, accepted public comment on the standards for pangasius farms through the end of March. After evaluating the feedback, the GAA’s Pangasius Technical Committee tweaked the standards and then passed them along to the SOC for final approval.

“With the addition of pangasius to the BAP ‘suite’ of fish and shrimp certifications, the BAP program can now serve an even wider public around the world,” said GAA Executive Director Wally Stevens.

The BAP program is a comprehensive, metrics-based certification program for aquaculture, including hatcheries, farms and processing plants. BAP standards encompass environmental and social responsibility, worker rights, animal welfare, food safety and traceability.

BAP standards have also been developed for shrimp, tilapia and channel catfish farms, hatcheries and processing plants. In addition to salmon farms, standards for mussel farms are in the works.
