ASMI Executive Director Alexa Tonkovich resigns

Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute Executive Director Alexa Tonkovich has resigned in order to pursue a master’s degree.

ASMI is a public-private partnership between the state of Alaska and the Alaska seafood industry working to market Alaska seafood globally. Tonkovich will leave ASMI in mid-December and will assist the organization’s Board of Directors in recruiting her replacement, ASMI said in a press release.

“I have chosen to pursue a masters in international business and have been accepted to multiple programs both in the U.S. and abroad,” Tonkovich said. “After nine years at ASMI, the timing felt right to further my education and prepare myself for wherever the next steps in my career may lead.”

Tonkovich took over as executive director in October 2015 after stints as the organization’s international director and its Asia and emerging markets program manager. She started at ASMI in October 2009.

ASMI Board of Directors Chair Jack Schultheis, general manager of Kwik’Pak Fisheries, said the board accepted Tonkovich’s resignation “with a heavy heart.”

"Her dedication to Alaska and the Alaska seafood industry is unparalleled,” Schultheis said. “While she will be missed, we also support her decision and wish her the very best in what is sure to be a very bright future.”

The ASMI Board of Directors will meet 19 November to discuss appointing an interim executive director and begin the first steps of recruiting a new executive director.
