Bremnes Seashore joins Salmon Group

Norwegian salmon producer Bremnes Seashore has joined the Salmon Group network of family-owned fish farming and aquaculture companies.

In becoming a Salmon Group shareholder, the Bømlo-based company, which has the brands SALMA and BÖMLO in its product portfolio, will also take part in its feed collaboration program. Announcing the move, both Bremnes Seashore and Salmon Group highlighted the value of setting strict requirements for themselves and the industry, and to contribute to the development of the industry.

This is both a social responsibility and a follow-up to the responsibility of food producers, the companies said.

“We have a common set of values with the other owners in Salmon Group, a group of salmon and trout farmers who are at the forefront of the development of sustainable farming. All companies will contribute to activity and jobs in the local communities along the coast. This makes us a good fit with the network,” Bremnes Seashore CEO Einar Eide said.

Based on Salmon Group's feasibility study "Sustainable farming of salmon and trout - What is that?" the network has been able to make specific adjustments of its own feed recipe. This has so far resulted in a 36 percent reduction in the carbon footprint from the production of salmon and trout that are fed with SG feed.

“We constantly make assessments of input factors in production and are conscious of choosing feed ingredients, transport methods and distances, technology, energy, etcetera, which can reduce the environmental impact. We must therefore always consider the composition of the feed to ensure that it reduces the overall impact. This includes taking care of the environment, welfare, health, and nutritional needs of the fish, and a good and healthy product that appeals to consumers,” Salmon Group Feed and Purchasing Manager Nils Inge Hitland said.

The Salmon Group’s push for more sustainable feed aligns with Bremnes Seashore’s own initiative, the company said.

“Salmon Group has taken major steps to reduce the footprint from feed production and transport and set the standard for sustainable feed for the aquaculture industry,” Bremnes Seashore Innovation Manager Laila Knarvik said. “We want to use more of marine raw materials and other sustainable feed sources, something we accomplish through this ownership.”

The producer has 23 fish farms and three hatcheries in the Norwegian regions of Hardanger, Sunnhordland and Rogaland. It has more than 450 employees and has a turnover of NOK 2.8 billion (USD 302.9 million, EUR 256.2 million).

With total production of 155,000 metric tons (MT), Salmon Group collectively represents 12 percent of the overall production volume in Norway. The network’s total turnover is NOK 7.5 billion (USD 811.5 million, EUR 686.2 million).
