Panama City, Panama-based Vima Foods has pledged to source from Global Seafood Alliance’s Best Aquaculture Practices-certified farms and processing plants, adding it to the list of market endorsers for BAP in the frozen, refrigerated, and preserved foods business.

Vima Foods markets around 750 food products, including shrimp, mussels, squid, Atlantic salmon, sea bass, and sea bream. It operates in Central America, the U.S., and China and its principal markets are Panama, Mexico, and the U.S. The company’s roots, however, are in Galicia, Spain, where it started in the fishing community before evolving into an international group consisting of multiple companies dedicated to the production, storage, distribution and marketing of deep-frozen, refrigerated, and preserved food products.

“It’s encouraging that we continue to make inroads in Spain and southern Europe. That one of the region’s biggest players in the frozen, refrigerated, and preserved foods business stepped up and pledged its support for BAP and BSP is a testament to Vima Foods’ commitment to responsible seafood production and sourcing as well as to the strength and comprehensiveness of our third-party certification programs,” GSA Communications Manager Steven Hedlund said.

The BSP program includes the Responsible Fishing Vessel Standard (RFVS), which ensures decent working conditions and best practices in fishing-vessel operations from catch to landing.

“Vima’s commitment to its customers and suppliers as well as its extensive experience has made them company worthy of their trust. That is why they choose BAP and BSP products for their customers,” BAP Spain Representative Anders Holmgren said.
