“Eat less seafood” – China’s government issues new nutrition guidelines

A Chinese government body has recommended the country's citizens eat less seafood.

New nutrition guidelines issued by the National Health and Family Planning Commission recommend Chinese consumers eat between 40 and 70 grams of seafood per day, a reduction on the 50- to 75-gram figure in the guidelines issued in 2007. The same consumption levels are recommended for red meat products in the document, which also suggests higher consumption of vegetables and protein-rich soybeans.

China is battling rapidly rising rates of diabetes, hypertension and obesity, according to a document compiled by the Institute of Nutrition and Food Hygiene at the China Academy of Preventative Medicine.

Lower consumption of animal fats and salt are among the recommendations of that study, which also calls for government subsidies for vegetable production and consumption in drier northern provinces and for more physical exercise programs in schools and communities.
