Seafood and health: UK gets it, still won’t eat it

New data shows that consumers in the United Kingdom don’t eat as much seafood as they should, even though they know how important it is to a healthy diet.

The data, cited by British seafood supplier Young’s Seafood, includes a survey by the Grocer from 16 May, which shows that 56 percent of the respondents think that seafood is the healthiest protein, beating out poultry and dairy by a significant margin. The study also showed that 83 percent of respondents are aware of the benefits of “good” fat content, such as omega-3 fatty acids present in fish.

Despite this, and a recommendation by the U.K. government of eating two portions of fish per week, one of “oily fish,” Young’s also noted a recent National Diet and Nutrition Survey released by Public Health England which said the mean consumption of oily fish “falls well below the recommended amount of one portion per week” in all age groups.

Young’s is known for its The Funky Fish Kitchen line of prepared retail fish products. Pete Ward, deputy chief executive at Young’s, said he hopes his company’s products can inspire people to change their eating habits, and improve the numbers.

“This recent research shows that most people know that fish is healthy, but that they still aren’t getting enough of it in their diet,” Ward said. “That’s why it’s important to inspire people to try different fish, with new flavors, recipes and meal ideas. I’d encourage everyone to try responsibly sourced fish twice a week, and to get creative with your meals.”
