Iglo wild fish products now 90 percent MSC-certified

Iglo Group, the largest frozen foods business in Europe, announced it will roll out the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) ecolabel on pack for all certified wild fish across Europe. The company’s wild fish portfolio in Europe is now 90 percent MSC-certified, with many country market brands planning to reach 100 percent by the end of 2015.

The company will use the ecolabel on more products in more countries than other food manufacturers throughout Europe. The MSC ecolabel will initially appear on 280 products, rising to 400 within a year in 16 countries across Europe, including the UK, Germany, Italy, Austria, France, Russia, Belgium and the Netherlands.

According to the MSC, about 89 percent of seafood shoppers in Europe think ocean sustainability is important, while 38 percent recognize the MSC label.

“This commitment will provide reassurance to the millions of consumers who buy our brands across Europe, including Birds Eye in the UK and Ireland, Iglo across continental Europe and for the first time, Findus in Italy,” said Elio Leoni Sceti, CEO of Iglo Group. “In 2015 alone, we expect that over 2.45 billion MSC certified fish fingers will be eaten by European consumers, and they can rest assured that the choices they make are sustainable ones.”

Iglo’s frozen fish products include MSC-certified pollock, hake, haddock, plaice, saithe (Coley) and wild salmon.
