Safeway’s sustainable seafood policy on exhibit

The California Academy of Sciences is showcasing Safeway’s leadership in seafood sustainability as part of its “Science in Action” video exhibit.

The video, which is playing at the academy’s main exhibit floor and on the institution’s website, highlights the innovative ways that retailers, researchers and environmentalists are working together to market seafood without jeopardizing the health of the marine ecosystems. Safeway is portrayed as an industry leader for its sustainable seafood sourcing policy.

“We are proud to be part of this video, which will serve as an educational tool for consumers and a call to action for everyone involved in fishing, raising or selling seafood,” said Phil Gibson, Safeway’s group director of seafood, who appears in the video.

Also interviewed for the video are representatives from the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program and Greenpeace-USA.

Safeway has been working with FishWise since last year to develop a comprehensive sustainable seafood sourcing policy centered on four key areas: formation of a sustainable seafood task force, supplier outreach, staff training and customer outreach. Information about the policy can now be found at most Safeway seafood departments. And just this year, Canada Safeway partnered with SeaChoice to improve its sustainable seafood procurement and employee and customer education.

The Pleasanton, Calif.-based retailer operates 1,694 stores in the United States and western Canada and reported 2010 sales of USD 41.1 billion.
