Seafood Choices Alliance (SCA) of Silver Spring, Md., on Sunday named six individuals and companies as Seafood Champions, an annual award recognizing dedication and leadership within the global sustainable seafood movement.
"It is an honor to be able to help recognize these Seafood Champion winners for their commitment to developing a responsible seafood industry," said Melanie Siggs, director of SCA. "As in previous years, these champions have been nominated and judged independently, with the 2009 winners chosen from a record number of submissions."
The awards were presented Sunday night at a ceremony at the Westin Waterfront hotel, adjacent to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, site of the International Boston Seafood Show.
The 2009 Seafood Champions are the American Albacore Fishing Association, which represents pole- and troll-caught albacore tuna fisheries in California; Association des Ligneurs de la Pointe de Bretagne, a fishermen's association based in France; Australis Aquaculture, a Turner Falls, Mass., barramundi farmer; Caroline Bennett, owner of London's only sustainable sushi restaurant, Moshi Moshi; OSO Madagascar, an organic shrimp farm based in Madagascar represented by Managing Director Mathias Ismail; and Gary Johnson, senior director of worldwide supply chain management for McDonald's Corp.

"We remain committed to pursuing responsible ways of producing seafood and are passionate about finding solutions to help our increasingly resource-constrained world."
Seafood Choices Alliance is an international program of SeaWeb that provides leadership and creates opportunities for change across the seafood industry and ocean conservation community.
