The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t stopped Mckinleyville, California, U.S.A.-based sustainable tuna supplier Wild Planet Foods from developing and delivering seafood products attuned to today’s consumers’ senses.
In fact, the company rolled out a new product line, Ready-to-Eat Tuna Salad Bowls, this April in an effort to capture consumers on the lookout for sustainable and nutritious proteins amid a global health crisis. According to Wild Planet Foods Senior Vice President of Marketing Heather Scott, the new offerings were “were inspired by trends that defined the food industry this year.”
“This includes consumers seeking more convenient and ready-to-eat foods that are nutritious, sustainable, and fit into their day-to-day routines. Consumers are also demanding versatility when it comes to their food choices – that is reflected in Wild Planet Ready-to-Eat Tuna Salads' dual function as either a light meal or a satisfying seafood snack that can be enjoyed at home or on the go,” Scott recently told SeafoodSource.
Featuring 100-percent pole-and-line caught skipjack tuna, the 5.6-ounce bowls come in three varieties: Wild Tuna Pasta Salad with organic red peppers, tomatoes, and green olives; Wild Tuna White Bean Salad with organic chickpeas, carrots, red peppers, and green olives; Wild Tuna, Bean and Corn Salad with organic sweet corn, red peppers, and carrots.
“After months of development, we are proud to share these new items with our consumers. These Ready-to-Eat Tuna Salad Bowls are a great-tasting, nutritious option that give our consumers the peace of mind knowing each salad is made from responsibly sourced ingredients,” Wild Planet President and Founder Bill Carvalho said of the products in April 2021.
Whole Foods Market stores nationwide began selling the line in May 2021, alongside other natural and conventional grocery stores. Wild Planet’s website and Amazon have also listed the bowls, which retailed online at a suggested price of USD 4.99 (EUR 4.17) as of April.
Other company products that have resonated in the North American market over the last 18 months include Wild Planet Albacore Wild Tuna and Wild Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Scott said. As a result, Scott added, these items have become pillars of Wild Planet’s product portfolio.
“What sets Wild Planet apart from the competition is the pristine quality of our fish, the care in which they have been caught and prepared and their unparalleled taste,” Scott said.
As with many other companies and individuals, the COVID-19 pandemic has been deeply influential for Wild Planet, Scott said. Find out how in this SeafoodSource Q&A.
