Major U.K. grocery chains are cutting prices on groceries – including seafood items – to start the new year.
Asda launched a Big Jan Price Drop initiative on 2 January, which cut prices by an average of 26 percent on more than 2,500 products. In addition to chicken breasts, cheese, and other products, Asda reduced the price on its own-brand 240-gram salmon fillets from GBP 4.50 (USD 5.60, EUR 5.40) to GBP 3.00 (USD 3.70, EUR 3.60) each.
Asda’s income tracker revealed that despite household spending power continuing to improve, rising inflation is expected to continue to pose challenges for families in 2025.
“We know that as we come out of the festive period, budgets can be a concern for many families. Our Big Jan Price Drop aims to ease that burden and make money stretch further for our customers, by reducing the prices of the products they’re buying week in, week out, continuing to offer uncompromising value to all,” Asda Chief Customer Officer David Hills said.
Alongside its price cuts, Asda announced it teamed up with Joe Wicks, also known as The Body Coach, to bring customers “nutritious and hassle-free” recipes that can help shoppers make affordable meals.
The main ingredient in each of Wicks’ Meal Picks – including whole medium chicken, salmon fillets, and turkey mince – are featured as part its Asda’s Price Drop. Creamy Salmon Pasta with Peas is one of the featured recipes in the new promotion.
Iceland Foods is also including a range of lower seafood prices in its new Mega Deals event, featuring an expanded GBP 1.00 (USD 1.25, EUR 1.20) or less range with over 1,000 products, as well as other price promotions such as expanding 10 for GBP 10.00 (USD 12.40, EUR 12.05) promotion, buy two get one free, and “half-price must-haves.”
Several seafood products are included in the promotions including such as Breaded King Prawns – 8 Pack for GBP 1.00 (USD 1.25, EUR 1.20), and Young's Chip Shop Omega 3 Fish Fillets – 2 Pack, priced at GBP 2.50 (USD 3.10, EUR 3.00) is included in promotion.

“We know families are looking to reduce spending in all aspects of everyday life, and we know that we need to do our bit to help. January will be a struggle for millions; it’s no secret that bills are going to rise, and it’s going to hit some families extremely hard,” Iceland Executive Chairman Richard Walker said.
Research commissioned by Iceland found that January is the most financially difficult month of the year for half of the population and that 17 percent of households aim to cut back on their spending by as much as GBP 10.00 (USD 12.40, EUR 12.05) to GBP 15.00 (USD 18.63, EUR 18.08) per week.
Additionally, 39 percent of Brits said they plan to cut back on takeout food, and 38 percent of Brits said they will not eat out during January in order to save money.
Meanwhile, Morrisons is adding several items to its existing Price Match items with Aldi and Lidl, bringing the total to more than 500.
