Waitress wins tilapia recipe contest

Thanks to tilapia, Emily Hobbs of Ozark, Mo., is one step closer to achieving her dream of attending the French Culinary Institute in New York.

The 24-year-old waitress and aspiring professional chef beat out five finalists and 300 entries to win Regal Springs Tilapia’s “Fishing for Frugal Recipes” contest, the Bradenton, Fla., company announced on Tuesday. She took home USD 1,500 (EUR 1,055), while the finalists won USD 150 (EUR 105.50) and a three-month supply of tilapia.

Hobbs’ winning recipe, Tilapia Tostados, is featured on Regal Spring’s Web site.

The other finalists’ recipes were Tilapia Cake, Tilapia Lasagna, Lettuce Wraps, Peppered Tilapia Salad and Crunchy Tilapia with Spinach Salad.

Regal Springs launched the recipe contest in May to find the best family-friendly tilapia meal for no more than USD 15 (EUR 10.55).

A team of four Chicago chefs judged the contest: Tony Priolo of Piccolo Sogno, Roger Herring of Socca, Chris Macchia of Coco Pazzo and Dirk Flanigan of The Gage.
