Starbucks Hong Kong debuts plant-based seafood analog
Starbucks is now selling plant-based seafood analog crab from OmniFoods, marking the first time the global coffee company has served vegan seafood.
The coffee chain’s 170 locations in Hong Kong are selling Thai Style Crab Cake Salad, made with vegan crab cakes from Hong Kong-based OmniFoods.
“We are thrilled to have Starbucks Hong Kong to be one of our first OmniSeafood launch partners,” Starbucks Hong Kong CEO David Yeung said in a statement, per VegNews. "Besides the exciting menu item we are introducing, we trust this is the beginning of raising awareness that ocean preservation and reduction of seafood consumption should be high on everyone’s agenda in terms of combating climate change and ensuring food security for the planet.”
OmniFoods launched its OmniSeafood line in September. The line includes Omni Classic Fillet, Omni Golden Fillet, and Omni Ocean Burger, OmniTuna and OmniSalmon.
OmniFoods is one of Asia’s largest plant-based pork analog producers. The company recently expanded to the United States with its OmniPork products at Sprouts Farmers Market and Whole Foods Market stores. The range will sell via a global network that currently sells the range of OmniPork products previously developed by OmniFoods owner Green Monday Group, Yeung told SeafoodSource.
