Pangasius prices in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta have fallen to 10-year low, according to Sai Gon Giai Phong Online.
In An Giang, Dong Thap provinces and Can Tho City, processing plants are paying VND 19,000 to VND 20,000 (USD 0.82 to USD 0.86, EUR 0.73 to EUR 0.77) per kilogram of pangasius, the lowest in the last 10 years. The same price range was given by Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) data for farm prices in Dong Thap in the week ending 4 July for smaller-sized fish between 0.7 and 0.8 kilograms in size.
Farmers are incurring loss of VND 5,000 (USD 0.21, EUR 0.19) per kilogram at this price.
The price of pangasius fish in the Mekong Delta has drastically fallen while slow consumption has posed a threat of oversupply and up inventory, Vietnam Pangasius Association Duong Nghia Quoc Chairman said on 5 July. Greater production due to expansion of farming and slower exports to the United States and China have together contributed to the price drop.
The prices at pond in An Giang ranged between VND20,500 VND 21,000 (USD 0.88 to USD 0.90, EUR 0.79 to USD 0.81) per kilogram over the week ending 27 June, according to data from the Export and Import Department of Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The prices were down 2.4 to 4.3 percent from the end of May, and these prices were for the size of between 0.8 and 1.0 kilograms per fish.
“We are seeing the same [decline] on market prices here with expectedly, a bit of a time lag,” a U.S.-based trader told SeafoodSource in late June.
He added it is worth noting the premiums for this size have gotten smaller.
“We now see the 5/7, 7/9 sizes in the low USD 2.00s [EUR 1.78] per pound for LTL quantities ex-CS. I would guess this correlates to import prices in the high USD 1.00s [EUR 0.89] CNF. 3/5s trade slightly higher at USD 0.05 to USD 0.10 [EUR 0.04 to 0.09] per pound,” the trader said.
