Nova Fisheries wraps up seafood-related operations

Nova Fisheries has formally exited the seafood industry.

The Seattle, Washington, U.S.A.-based firm, which was founded in 1986 by Bob Simon, previously divested itself of all of its fisheries holdings in 2015, and announced Tuesday, 14 December it has sold its manufacturing and customer business, with the transaction scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021.

The company produced value-added products – particularly manufactured finished products – in conjunction with shore plants in Alaska’s Pacific Northwest and Canada’s Eastern Atlantic coast. Soon after its founding, the company also began developing equipment and technology to aid in catching and processing shellfish. In 2005, the company helped pioneer the southern king crab fishery in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Argentina.

“Nova Fisheries Inc., with 35 years as a primary producer, processor and manufacturer of finished foods, is credited with advancing the Alaska scallop fishery for 25 years. In addition, NOVA helped to pioneer the commercial development of the southern king crab fishery beginning in 2005, along with financing Marine Stewardship Council certification of this South American fishery," the company said. "Under the current stakeholders undertaking and financing, certification is pending award next year.”

Nova will continue to operate a legacy website that will detail its activities, including its philanthropic endeavors, which will continue by way of an established trust foundation, according to the company. Simon is now focused on new engineering technologies unrelated to the seafood industry, in addition to continued involvement with numerous nonprofit endeavors.
