SalMar reports depleted Q2 harvests

Frøya, Norway-headquartered salmon farmer SalMar ASA harvested 32,400 metric tons (MT) of head-on gutted (HOG) salmon in the second quarter of 2022 down 4,200 MT on the corresponding period of 2021, with reduced volumes coming from both its Norwegian and Icelandic operations.

According to SalMar's latest trading update, Fish Farming Central Norway, the group’s largest business segment, harvested a total of 20,700 MT of salmon in the last quarter, which was 300 MT less than in Q2 2021. Fish Farming Northern Norway’s Q2 total was 4,600 MT less at 8,700 MT.

Subsidiary Icelandic Salmon harvested 1,000 MT in the quarter, which was 1,300 MT less than in the corresponding period of last year.

In the first-quarter of this year, SalMar’s Fish Farming Central Norway harvested 24,900 MT of salmon, while Fish Farming Northern Norway supplied 16,800 MT. Icelandic Salmon produced 3,400 MT.

Overall, SalMar has forecast a 2022 salmon harvest of 175,000 MT in Norway and 16,000 MT in Iceland. It also co-owns Scottish Sea Farms, which is expected to produce 46,000 MT this year, and anticipates a 23,000 MT share to come from this business.

In the full-year 2021, SalMar harvested 182,100 MT of salmon, up from 161,500 MT in 2020. Its Fish Farming Central Norway and Fish Farming Northern Norway segments contributed increased volumes of 110,700 MT and 59,800 MT respectively, while Icelandic Salmon harvested a slightly higher 11,500 MT.
