Americans expected to spend a record USD 20.1 billion this Father’s Day

Americans are planning to spend a record USD 20.1 billion (EUR 17 billion) on Father’s Day this year, and seafood suppliers and restaurants aim to take advantage of the holiday with a variety of promotions.

The National Retail Federation’s (NRF) annual survey conducted by Prosper Insight & Analytics found that total spending for the holiday will surpass last year’s record figure of USD 17 billion (EUR 14 billion).

“Americans are looking forward to celebrating their fathers, husbands, and sons this Father’s Day,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said in a press release. “With our nation now making significant strides toward recovery and reopening, retailers are prepared to help customers safely find items they want and need to make this year’s holiday celebration extra meaningful.”

The number of consumers planning a special outing such as dinner or brunch to celebrate dads is back up to pre-pandemic levels, according to NRF.

The top gifts shoppers plan to purchase for Father's Day are greeting cards (59 percent), clothing (49 percent), a special outing (46 percent), gift cards (45 percent), and personal care items (28 percent), NRF found.

Survey respondents indicated they planned to spend an average of USD 174 (EUR 146) on Father’s Day items – USD 26 (EUR 21) more than last year and a record-high for the survey. NRF said about half (47 percent) of that increase comes from spending more on special outings, clothing, and consumer electronics.

“Consumers are showing they are comfortable with pre-pandemic behaviors and activities, particularly as we head into the summer season,” Prosper Vice President of Strategy Phil Rist said. “Many are planning to take dad out for a special meal or experience this Father’s Day, which wasn’t an option last year during the shutdowns.”

Red Lobster is one of many U.S. restaurant chains offering promotions for the holiday.

The Orlando, Florida-based chain is touting its Family Meal Deals that include “guest favorite dishes in family-sized portions that can easily be ordered to go or for delivery,” Red Lobster said in a press release on RestaurantNews.com.

Red Lobster is also touting its party platters for large gatherings. Platters can include Parrot Isle Jumbo Coconut Shrimp, Walt’s Favorite Shrimp, and Crunchy Popcorn Shrimp, and other seafood.

The restaurant chain is also encouraging fathers to order its new Red Lobster Feasts, such as its Ultimate Surf & Turf Feast, which includes a 6-ounce filet mignon, butter-poached Maine lobster tail, bacon-wrapped sea scallops, and choice of two sides.

Meanwhile, Boston, Massachusetts-based Legal Sea Foods is offering free delivery on orders from its online store.

Bronx, New York-based FultonFishMarket.com is promoting its many gift boxes for dads, which can be delivered nationwide. Customers can order The Fish Drop, the site’s subscription seafood box, or combination boxes such as the Seafood Lover’s Box, which includes four 8-ounce Fulton Fresh Salmon Portions, two pounds of fresh sea scallops, two pounds of fresh white Gulf shrimp, four-dozen live Blue Point oysters, four-dozen live littleneck clams, and two pounds of frozen cooked cocktail shrimp.

Other seafood items Fulton is recommending for fathers include wild North American lobsters, wild halibut, red king crab legs, and whole North American snapper.
