Vietnam boosts shrimp exports to EU, US, and South Korea

Vietnam earned higher value from its shrimp exports in November thanks to the growth in sales to major markets, including the European Union, the United States, and South Korea.

In November, the country shipped shrimp worth USD 366 million (EUR 323 million), an increase of 16 percent from a year earlier, according to latest data from Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

The export value over January-November also surged 3.4 percent year-on-year to USD 3.55 billion (EUR 2.8 billion).

Sales to the E.U. rose to USD 66.5 million (EUR 58.7 million) in November, a growth of 86.4 percent year-on-year. Of the total, the export value of vannamei was USD 51 million (EUR 45 million), going up 82 percent year-on-year, followed by sales of black tiger shrimp with USD 12.6 million (EUR 11 million), skyrocketing 158 percent year-on-year.

Major markets within the bloc that saw high sales included the Netherlands, up 47 percent from November 2020; Germany, 87 percent higher year-on-year; Belgium, soaring 118 percent; France, rising 161 percent; Denmark, up 99 percent; Sweden, jumping 196 percent; and Italy, 123 percent higher year-on-year.

Shrimp from Vietnam was mainly imported into the E.U. through the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, accounting for nearly 23 percent of the total; Port of Hamburg in Germany, 14 percent; and Port of Antwerpen in Belgium, 12.2 percent.

Between January and November, Vietnam exported shrimp worth USD 548 million (EUR 484 million) to the E.U., up 16 percent from a year earlier. Of the total, sales of vannamei grew 16 percent to USD 437 million (EUR 386 million) while the export value of black tiger shrimp saw an increase of 31 percent year-on-year to USD 87 million (EUR 76.8 million).

In November, sales to the U.S. also increased 24 percent year-on-year while the value of the exports to South Korea was up 19 percent compared to a year ago, VASEP said, without providing further details.
