Vietnam earned USD 213.5 million (EUR 191.1 million) from exports of grilled fish and surimi in the first eight months of this year, rising 13.3 percent from a year earlier, according to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) on 18 October.
In August, the country exported grilled fish and surimi worth nearly USD 31 million (EUR 27.7 million), up 0.6 percent year-on-year.
The Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) was the biggest buyer of grilled fish and surimi from Vietnam. The sales to the countries in the bloc were USD 62.9 million (EUR 56.3 million) in value between January and August, up 1.8 percent year-on-year. The value of the exports to ASEAN, however, began to slide from the second quarter of this year, but Vietnam remained the major supplier of grilled fish and surimi for ASEAN. The sales to Malaysia rose in value but the value of the exports to Singapore and Thailand fell in the period, said VASEP.
The exports to South Korea were USD 62 million (EUR 55.5 million) in value in the first eight months, up 0.9 percent year-on-year. The sales, however, declined in August with USD 8.9 million (EUR 7.96 million), 22.9 percent lower than the same period of 2018.
Vietnam exported grilled fish and surimi worth USD 24.5 million (EUR 21.9 million) over January-August, up 1.8 percent. The export value in August went down 19.4 percent year-on-year to USD 2.9 million (EUR 2.6 million), similar to the trend of exports to South Korea. Vietnam was the fifth largest supplier of grilled fish and surimi for Japan, after Thailand, Norway, India and China, VASEP said.
The sales of grilled fish and surimi from Vietnam to the European Union in the period soared with three-digit increase, VASEP said, without providing any figure.
Vietnam’s export value of grilled fish and surimi was nearly USD 324 million (EUR 290 million) last year, rising 26.5 percent from 2017, with South Korea, ASEAN, Japan, China, Russia, Taiwan, E.U., and the United States as major buyers.
