Vietnam’s seafood output sees November surge

Vietnam produced an estimated 763,800 metric tons (MT) of seafood in November, an increase of 6.7 percent year-on-year, according to data from the General Statistics Office.

Of that total, the output from aquaculture in the month was estimated at 456,900 MT, rising 7.9 percent year-on-year. The output from aquaculture was comprised of 319,100 MT of fish, up 6.9 percent, and 94,800 MT of shrimp, up 12.5 percent.

The country produced an estimated 170,100 MT of pangasius in the month, up 7.7 percent year-on-year, with production mainly from the provinces of Dong Thap (45,900 MT, up 7.5 percent), An Giang (43,200 MT, 12.4 percent year-on-year), and Can Tho (23,800 MT, up 2 percent).

Vietnam produced an estimated 65,600 MT of whiteleg shrimp, up 14.1 percent, and 25,600 MT of giant tiger shrimp in November, up 3.6 percent year-on-year, GSO said.

Thanks to favorable weather conditions in November, wild catch fisheries' output went up by 5 percent year-on-year to roughly 306,900 MT, a total comprised of fish (232,200 MT, up 5.6 percent year-on-year), shrimp (11,900 MT, down 5.6 percent), and other species (62,800 MT, up 4.7 percent).

From January to November 2019, Vietnam is estimated to have produced 7.47 million MT of seafood, up 5.7 percent from 2018, including nearly 4 million MT from farming, up 6.4 percent, and 3.47 million MT of wild-caught output, up 4.8 percent.

Vietnam exported seafood worth USD 7.06 billion (EUR 6.4 billion) in the first 10 months of this year, down 2.4 percent from the same period in 2018, mainly to the United States with export value of USD 1.22 billion (EUR 1.1 billion), down 7.6 percent year-on-year; Japan, with USD 1.21 billion (EUR 1.09 billion), up 8 percent; and China with USD 976.2 million (USD 884.3 million), surging 16.9 percent from last year, according to customs data released last month.
