China importing less seafood in 2009

China, one of the world’s largest seafood importers and exporters, watched its seafood imports fall 11 percent through May this year, according to the country’s General Administration of Customs.

China imported 683,640 metric tons of seafood worth USD 971 million (EUR 678.4 million) from January to May this year, down 11 percent from the same five-month period last year. The General Administration of Customs attribute the drop to weakening demand for seafood due to the global financial crisis.

Just 10 years ago, China was not even among the world’s 15 largest seafood importers. But now China’s seafood consumption is growing, as well as its seafood production. The country represents 67 percent (34.43 million metric tons) of the world’s seafood output.
