Clearwater debuts first branded live lobster

Clearwater Seafoods on Thursday announced that it has developed a way to brand its live lobster.

The Bedford, Nova Scotia-based company said it has created a plastic sleeve that fits over one of the lobster’s banded claws. It is a safe and humane method that allows the company to put its brand directly on the lobster’s claw and into the consumer’s hands, according to Clearwater. Patents are pending on the plastic sleeve.

The first market to receive the Clearwater-branded live lobster will be China, just in time for the Chinese New Year, which kicks off on 3 February.

“All lobster aren’t created equal, and consumers often don’t know what they’re getting until they crack the shell,” said Clearwater CEO Ian Smith. “Canadian hard shell lobster is among the finest in the world. But at Clearwater our passion for wild, premium, sustainable seafood means that we must go the extra mile to ensure our customers know that they’re buying the very best.

“In today’s crowded global marketplace, if you have a superior product you need to do everything possible to stand apart from the crowd,” added Smith.
