Deceleration of China’s seafood processing exports slows

Authorities in China’s leading whitefish processing region are claiming a rebound in exports of processed and reprocessed seafood.

In the first four months of 2016, Liaoning Province saw exports of aquatic products total 230,000 metric tons worth USD 797 million (EUR 715 million). The totals for processed seafood are down 6 percent, while the numbers for reprocessed seafood are down 2.5 percent.

“But the decline continued to decelerate and last month decreased by 0.2 and 0.4 percentage points, respectively…The processing trade is starting to restore growth,” a provincial representative of the Ministry of Agriculture said.

Importantly for exporters to China, the value of imports into China is rising. The first four months of 2016 saw the import of 309,300 million metric tons of goods worth USD 500 million (EUR 449 million). That figure is down 10.8 percent in terms of volume but represents a slip of only 0.7 percent in value terms.
