Farmed salmon detained at the U.S.-Canadian border in early December for containing traces of malachite green has been released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Creative Salmon Co. and Marine Harvest Canada, the companies that produced the salmon, made the announcement in separate press releases on Friday.
"We are extremely happy with the news from the FDA and glad to put this unfortunate event behind us," said Creative Salmon, which raises antibiotic- and hormone-free king salmon. "We apologize for any inconvenience this event may have caused our customers, suppliers and/or staff."
In mid-January, the FDA gave the companies the OK to resume harvesting salmon from their Vancouver Island, British Columbia, farms after numerous fish samples tested negative for malachite green, a fungicide banned for use in food production because itâ??s a potential carcinogen.
