Fisher King Seafoods rearranges leadership team

Key shifts in leadership are underway as Fisher King Seafoods (FKS) enters into its next phase of growth.

In lieu of Grant Stonehouse’s departure, co-founder and president Tor Conklin will soon assume the role of CEO and chairman for Fisher King Seafoods. Stonehouse, who co-founded the company with Conklin in 1996, officially retired from his position as chairman at the beginning of June.

“We thank Grant Stonehouse for his contribution to the rapid growth and success of Fisher King Seafoods,” said Conklin in a prepared statement. “Grant has been a great friend and business partner with the shared vision, knowledge and commitment to direct Fisher King as a leader in the seafood sector.”

Conklin isn’t the only one on the move within Fisher King Seafoods – 17-year company veteran Mark Powell is also up for a promotion, from vice president to president. Both appointments assure that FKS in committed to investing in the future, according to Stonehouse.

“I’m thrilled that Tor and Mark are investing in the future, and together with Nichirei Fresh Inc. they are taking the company to its next stages of growth,” said Stonehouse. “I’m humbled by the support of past and current employees, and grateful for the opportunity to grow our company into what is considered a strong, sustainable global seafood business, headquartered right here in Atlantic Canada.”

Back in 2009, Nichirei Fresh Inc. – one of Japan’s largest seafood companies and food service distributors – became an equity partner with Fisher King Seafoods, which procures sustainable wild caught shellfish and finfish from Atlantic Canada and around the globe. The equity partnership has seen FKS climb from USD 51 million (EUR 45 million) in sales in 2009 to USD 158 million (EUR 140 million) in sales as the end of 2014. Further growth is expected by FKS as continued expansion of global markets, amped development in core items and an evolving sushi product line take hold.

The core seafood products for which FKS is best known incorporate snow crab, lobster, scallops, cold-water shrimp, ocean perch, turbot and a wide range of sashimi. The company has a strong presence in the North American foodservice and retail sectors and is growing its customer base in Europe and Asia.

Stonehouse, who has spent 35 years working in the seafood sector, plans to turn his full attention to Davis Strait Fisheries Limited, a business he created in 1991 and that he continues to lead, following his FKS exit.
