Iceland catch volume down 23%

Iceland’s total fish catch volume increased by 45 percent to 130.7 metric tons (MT) in May 2014 compared to the same month in 2013, according to data from Statistics Iceland.

The increase is attributed to more than a 100 percent increase in blue whiting catch and a 12 percent increase in cod catches.
However, when comparing 12-month periods, there has been a 23 percent decrease to 1.1 million MT in catches between June 2013 and May 2014 compared to the same period one year earlier.

Fish catches in Iceland decreased by 9.5 percent in constant prices in the months of May 2013 and May 2014. During 2013-2014 there was a decrease by 4.5 percent in fish catches at constant prices compared to 2012-2013.
