Iceland’s seafood exports rise in 2008

Iceland on Monday released seafood export figures for 2008.

The country’s seafood exports reached 696.9 metric tons last year, up 12.5 percent from 2007. They were valued at ISK 171.3 billion (USD 761.3 million, EUR 558.7 million), up 34.3 percent from 2007.

In terms of quantity, frozen products represented about 43 percent of total seafood exports in 2008, followed by fishmeal and fish oil (29 percent), fresh products (16 percent), salted products (5.5 percent) and dried products (less than 2 percent).

Among Iceland’s top seafood exports were herring (183.6 million metric tons), cod (88.3 million metric tons), capelin (77.2 million metric tons), haddock (53.1 million metric tons), redfish (47.4 million metric tons) and saithe (30 million metric tons).

The United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, the United States and Japan were among the top destinations of Icelandic seafood.
