5_Fish.pngSmartFish, Mexico (Wild Capture, Supply Chain Innovation) – Partnering exclusively with co-ops that practice transparency and manage themselves democratically, SmartFish produces products that are both socially and environmentally sustainable. According to the company, each of its partners “has adopted at least one of a range of sustainability measures including fisheries reserves, catch quotas and size limits.” Some of the species featured by SmartFish include spiny lobster, shrimp, yellowtail and spotted sand bass.

 

 

8_fish.pngTarget Marine Hatcheries, Canada (Aquaculture Technology) – Headquartered on the coast of British Columbia with a land-based farm near Porpoise Bay in Sechelt, Target Marine Hatcheries has been in business since 1999. The products produced by the company are certified organic and come recommended by Ocean Wise; moreover, Target Marine Hatcheries provides products that are considered Best Choice by SeaChoice and Seafood Watch. The company is invested in sturgeon aquaculture and is the crafter of North Divine Caviar.

 

 

18_Fish.pngTimberFish Technologies, New York (Aquaculture Technology) – Formed in 2008, TimberFish is committed to implementing microbial biomass technologies and waste treatment systems into fully-integrated food and energy production. The TimberFish team is fronted by biophysicist Jere Northrop, “a biotechnology inventor and serial entrepreneur with extensive experience in animal agriculture, wastewater treatment, and nutrient management systems.” The company is working on what it calls the TimberFish Wine – Fish Project, which will ultimately provide “contaminant free and natural tasting and appearing seafood.” Get more details on the project here.
