An outstanding amount of about NAD 76 million for levies allegedly still has to be paid by about 25 hake right holders for the period between the 2003/2004 and 2010/2011 fishing seasons, according to a Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources document in possession of The Namibian.
The biggest debtor of the 39 names on the list is the parastatal, National Fishing Corporation of Namibia (Fishcor) at Lüderitz, which has a debt of nearly NAD 21.7 million according to the list.?
Overberg Fishing in Walvis Bay allegedly owes more than NAD 10.5 million. Fourteen right holders, which include Fishcor and Overberg, owe more than NAD 1 million each.
Sixteen of these have outstanding amounts from before the current fishing season.?
The three right holders of Etale Fishing Co., namely Ompagona Fishing, Ehanga Fishing and Ozohi Fishing, together owe nearly NAD 20 million in unpaid levies. As a result of this, Etale’s fishing licence was not renewed for the new fishing season — a matter which has been heard in the Windhoek High Court on three occasions.
