Peru confirms no second anchovy harvest

Peru’s Ministry of Production, Produce, confirmed on Monday that there will be no further anchoveta harvest on the north-central Peruvian coast until environmental conditions have retuned to normal, following the advice of Imarpe (Instituto del Mar del Peru).

Imarpe recommended in October that there should be no second anchovy fishery in 2014 due to the spread of Kelvin waves forming a moderate El Niño event, the cumulative effect of which had reduced the abundance of food and a significant decrease in the availability of anchovy.

Imarpe intensified the monitoring in the Peruvian Sea and scheduled a hydroacoustic assessment of its pelagic resources last month.

On Monday, Imarpe submitted to Produce its report on state of north-central stock Peruvian anchoveta, indicating a wider distribution of anchovy.

“However, the assessed biomass and abundance of juveniles, makes it impossible to assign a catch quota,” said Produce in a news release. There will be no further fishing in the area until a “strong recovery” of the anchoveta stock is witnessed.
