17: Harbor Seafood
of New Hyde Park, N.Y., is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Founder Pete Cardone, a former chef, transitioned the company from brokerage into importing and it has grown steadily ever since, particularly over the last decade in which its turnover increased by more than $100 million. Its core products include crabmeat, clams, lobsters, crab legs, scallops, squid, shrimp, snapper, tilapia and tuna. (Harbor Seafood’s 2013 sales were $284 million, ranked No. 20.)
