#1: Mexico government announces seizure of nearly 4,300 tons of illegal fishing gear, products in first half of 2025

The most read story in SeafoodSource in 2025 related to efforts by the Mexican government to crack down on illegal fishing. 

The National Commission for Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA) announced in August it had already seized thousands of pieces of fishing gear, over 200 vehicles, and more as part of its efforts to improve fisheries inspections and fight illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in its waters.

Part of those efforts are designed to try and fight the illegal totoaba trade, which has been largely responsible for the decline of both the fish species and the critically endangered vaquita.
