3. Chile algae crisis: Financial loss, potential gains and the future of the Chilean salmon industry
Few phenomena have rattled and captured the attention of the seafood industry as completely in 2016 as the harmful algae bloom that decimated much of the Chilean farmed salmon sector situated in the country’s Region X in February and March. Several major farmed salmon producers across the board fell victim to the bloom, including AquaChile, Australis Mar, Blumar, Camanchaca, Cermaq, Australis Mar, Salmones Humboldt, Marine Farm, Marine Harvest Chile, Multiexport Foods and Ventisqueros.
