Top global stories of 2014: Alibaba lobster sales, Thai Union buys Bumble Bee

4. It’s been a good year for Thai Union Frozen Products. The company has been on a buying spree, first picking up French salmon smoker MerAlliance, then less than two weeks later announcing it was buying Norwegian seafood company King Oscar Co. In announcing the purchases, Thai Union said there were plans for more acquisitions.

Then, as if it hadn’t gone after a target large enough, it announced in December that it was buying Bumble Bee Foods for a total price of USD 1.5 billion (EUR 1.2 billion).

Like Zhangzidao, it seems Thai Union is on an expansion kick. The Bumble Bee buy will make it the largest canned tuna provider in the United States, if not the world. It will be the largest producer of skipjack tuna worldwide, and with the latest buy is establishing itself as even more of a world seafood industry leader than it was before.
